Hello, everyone. I am Dr. Xibin Liang.
I am a neuroscientist in Stanford University , and an acupuncturist holding appointments of Professorship in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture at two universities in the Bay Area.
As an acupuncturist, I had been trained specially for acupuncture and TCM for 13 years under several mentors in three top TCM and Modern medical universities in China. I finished my residency in TCM & acupuncture and was an attending physician at the Department of Acupuncture in a big hospital in China before moving to America.
As a neuroscientist, I was the pioneer in investigating the the mechanism of acupuncture treatment of Parkinson's Disease. My publications helped acupuncturists, neurologists as well as the patients to understand the role that acupuncture plays in the management of neurodegenerative disorders.
I graduated in 1987 from Shandong TCM University, one of the best TCM universities in China. I then worked in a pain clinic for two years treating patients with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. In September 1989, Dr.Yutan Liu, Professor and then-Director of the Department of Acupuncture, the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong TCM University, accepted me as a Master’s degree student. I studied under him for three years at the in-patient and outpatient clinic of the hospital. Dr. Liu corrected my way of acupoint selection, needle insertion and manipulation hand by hand. He taught me the classic theory and modern findings and the correct way to combine them scientifically in the clinical treatment. It was during this period that I learned the quintessence of acupuncture, experienced its amazing efficacy, and fell in love with this profession. My marster's thesis was to optimize the acupuncture treatment pootocol for fibrocystic disease of the breast in women. I therefore had a large col-laboration with several gynecologists in order to complete my project. This collaboration not only enabled me to accomplish my Master's thesis successfully but also opened my eyes to see the wonderful effects of acupuncture in treating women's diseases.
After completion of my Master’s degree, I worked as an attending physician (Assistant Professor Equivalent) at the Department of Acupuncture, Jinan City TCM, Hospital, where I had treated patients with miscellaneous disorders such as various kinds of pain, endocrine system imbalances, neurological disorders, cancer, stroke, etc .As a leader in the physician group, I had guided three resident doctors in their residency.
But my passion in seeking the truth of acupuncture never stopped. My eagerness to learn more about the mechanisms underlying the magical effect of acupuncture drove me into the area of acupoint anatomy in 1995, where under the mentorship of Professor Zhenguo Yan, a pioneer in acupoint anatomy in Shanghai TCM University , I investigated the anatomical structure of most of the acupoints and accomplished my Ph. D degree. During the period, I was attracted by the research that acupuncture’s effect was related to the release of neurotransmitters in the brain. My passion in knowing more of this theory took me into the field of neuroscience. I deemed it a challenge for me to accept an offer from Dr. Ji-sheng Han, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and a NIH advisor on acupuncture, who chose me as a post-doctoral fellow from several candidates in 1998. As a result, my entire academic career, as an acupuncturist and neuroscientist, has benefited from my training under his supervision. My work helped to elucidate the mechanism of acupuncture in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
My clinical practice now is a continuation of my clinical work in China and my evidence-based research in acupuncture and neurological diseases both in China and the USA . My treatment scope includes various kinds of pain, neurological disease infertility(male&female), endocrine diseases, etc(see Service section)
I am pround to say that my years of training in TCM , Acupuncture and the modern neurosciences give me a unique way in understanding and doing acupuncture. I believe that a good acupuncturist must know not only how to insert needles into the body but also how to insert them correctly, effectively, precisely and scientifically, because every needle matters and the patient’s health is in the hands of practitioners. To me ,acupuncture is an incarnation of my love, passion and life.
I appreciate your trust and welcome every patient to visit my office.
